Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) is a process where an exceptionally pure, solid coating material is used to generate an ionized metal vapour which forms a coating mixture with inert gases.

Through condensation, a thin layer is deposited onto the surface of the watch. The PVD process is carried out under a forced vacuum in a coating chamber. This procedure is one of the most modern and ecologically sustainable coating technologies. PVD coatings are highly adhesive, hard and abrasion-resistant. They are extremely smooth and particularly suited to coating watch parts. These coatings can be single-layer, multi-layer or can be applied in graduated layers. The layer thickness ranges from 1 to 5 microns, although in some cases, just 0.5 microns or 15 microns and more can be applied.

Depending on the initial material and the inert gas employed, a wide range of PVD coatings can be applied. Essentially, these fall into four main groups: nitrides, carbides, oxides and carbons (Diamond like carbon).

A watch with a water resistance rating of 5 ATM (atmospheres) is suitable for everyday use and can withstand splashes, rain, and showering. According to ISO standard 22810, this level of water resistance signifies that the watch can withstand static pressure equivalent to submersion at a depth of 50 meters.

While a 5 ATM rating offers more protection than a 3 ATM rating, it is important to understand the limitations for swimming. The dynamic forces exerted during swimming, such as the movement of your arms through the water and the impact of diving, can create pressure that exceeds the static test conditions.

Therefore, while your Jowissa watch with a 5 ATM rating can tolerate brief immersion and splashes, we generally advise against wearing it for prolonged swimming or diving activities. Consistent exposure to these conditions may compromise the water-resistant seals and potentially lead to water damage which would not be covered under the warranty.

For regular swimming or more intensive water activities, we recommend considering Jowissa models with a higher water resistance rating, typically 10 ATM or more. These models are specifically designed and tested to withstand greater water pressure and are more suitable for such use. However, the term "diamond" is also significant in relation to Jowissa's distinct design element: the diamond-cut glass. This refers to a specific step in the production process where the edges of the watch crystal are precisely cut using diamond tools. Therefore, while the crystal on your Jowissa watch is not a real diamond, it is made of qualitative materials selected for their clarity and protective properties, ensuring the longevity and readability of your timepiece.

Mineral crystal, which is used in most Jowissa watches, is a type of glass that's been treated to make it a bit tougher than regular glass. Think of the glass in a smart phone screen – mineral crystal is similar to that.

This high level of hardnes means that sapphire crystal is much more resistant to scratches from common materials like coins, keys, dust, and even accidental bumps against many surfaces.

However, it's important to know that "scratch-proof" isn't entirely accurate. It is still possible to scratch sapphire crystal if it comes into contact with something equally hard or harder, such as other sapphire materials, diamond jewelry, or certain abrasive materials.

In summary:
- Sapphire crystal is very scratch resistant due to its high hardness.

Most of our Jowissa watch crystals are made with mineral glass. Think of it like the glass in your windows, but a bit tougher. It can handle everyday wear and tear pretty well and is more scratch resistant than regular plastic.

However, just like anything made of glass, it's not completely scratch-proof. Really hard or sharp things could potentially leave a mark.

For some of our more premium collections, we also use sapphire crystal. Sapphire is very tough! It's much harder than mineral glass and offers even better scratch resistance. You'll usually find this mentioned in the specific watch description if it has a sapphire crystal.

This is a deliberate feature called the End-of-Life (EOL) indicator, found in high-quality Swiss quartz movements. It signals that the battery is nearing the end of its life and needs to be replaced soon. Your watch will continue to keep accurate time, but you should visit a professional watchmaker to have the battery changed within the next few weeks.

This rule applies to both quartz and automatic watches. You should avoid manually changing the date during these hours (the "danger zone") because the watch's internal gears are already engaging to advance the date automatically. Forcing a manual change while these gears are locked can break the delicate teeth of the movement. Pro tip: To be safe, always pull the crown out and move the hands to 6:30 before setting the date, then reset the time to the correct hour.

The ideal watch size depends on your wrist circumference and personal style. As a general rule, for wrists under 15cm, case diameters between 20mm and 30mm look most balanced. For wrists between 15cm and 17cm, sizes from 30mm to 35mm are ideal. For larger wrists, cases 35mm and above provide a bold look. Reading a Roman numeral watch is simple once you know the three basic symbols: I (1), V (5), and X (10). The numbers 1 to 3 are written as I, II, and III. The number 4 is traditionally written as IIII on watches. From 6 to 8, you add I to V (VI, VII, VIII). 9 is written as IX (one before ten), and 12 is XII. This elegant style is the signature feature of the Jowissa Roma collection.

This is known as the "Watchmaker's Four." We use IIII instead of IV primarily for visual symmetry. On a round dial, the four characters of IIII perfectly balance the four heavy characters of VIII (8) on the opposite side. It also creates a harmonious pattern: the first four numbers use only I, the next four use V, and the last four use X. This classical tradition is kept alive in our Swiss Made timepieces.

While possible, it is generally not recommended for battery-powered quartz watches. Leaving the chronograph function running continuously drains the battery significantly faster than standard timekeeping. A Chronometer is a specific certification given to a high-precision watch movement (usually mechanical) that has passed rigorous accuracy tests by COSC (Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute). A watch can be both, but "Chronograph" refers to the function, while "Chronometer" refers to the accuracy rating.
